The book is a collection of eight essays on topics in progressive Christianity, with a new hymn to accompany each essay. The hymns are printed in the book, and are also available to be freely downloaded and copied (for non-commercial use) from my web site. The essays explore foundational issues of progressive theology. They invite the reader to think about questions like these: How do we recognize the authority of scripture — if not as the inerrant and infallible word of God? How does Jesus make a difference — if not simply by dying for our sins?  And, in general, how can we treasure the wisdom of our faith ancestors, while respectfully rejecting their mistakes?

With eight short chapters and eight new hymns, the book makes a good focus for an eight-week reading group. With that in mind, I’ve created eight companion videos. The videos present ideas from each chapter, and also include me at the keyboard, offering sing-along introductions to the hymns. The videos average about a half hour in length, which leaves plenty of time for discussion in a one-hour class. In the present Covid-19 climate, reading groups may well prefer to meet online. The book and videos have worked well for me in online classes; I’ve used Zoom to share the video for the week, and then to facilitate the online discussion. The video package includes a twenty-page guide for the study group leader.
